Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder. For reasons unknown to science, the pancreas suddenly ceases to produce the hormone insulin, which stimulates the absorption of sugar and starchy foods, resulting in a high content of sugar in the blood and urine. It has been suggested that diabetes mellitus is hereditary but no cause to the insufficient production of insulin has yet been proved.

Recently, however, it has been suggested that diabetes mellitus is a result of a continuous overload of the immune system, causing the immune system to systematically attack and destroy the beta cells that produce insulin in the pancreas among diabetics.

In this connection, it is worth noting that until recently diabetes mellitus was a Western phenomenon, now slowly spreading to those Third World countries that have adopted Western life styles and eating habbits.
